How do you, like memorize stuff?

I often get asked by an artist somewhere “how do you memorize your poetry?”

and I usually reply with a casual “I rehearse the shit out of it”

I realized that’s not very helpful

so i decided to elaborate a bit.

A lot of artists have trouble memorizing at first, and there’s no law that says you HAVE to memorize anything, but if you’re looking to up your performance and one day land some paid gigs, memorization is a first step in the right direction.

So here are a couple of tips on memorization, hope it helps.

Repetition

“Repetition is the mother of learning, the father of action, which makes it the architect of accomplishment.”

―Zig Ziglar

You ever catch yourself singing one of your favorite songs word for word?

You weren’t trying to memorize it the last two weeks, you’ve just been playing it because you enjoy the song.

Memorizing  your writing is the same process.

When I’m working on a piece, even if it’s not complete I’ll read it once a day up to the point I left off.

If I think of something I can add to it great,

If not it’s still a good chance to practice.

Find a little time to read your pieces every day.

When you feel like you’ve got it at least partially down,

try it from memory, if you slip up you can turn back to your paper.

Before you know it you’ll have it down!

Consistency

It goes without saying that only you can keep yourself going

you get out of the process what you put in.

No one is going to be there along the way to make you rehearse.

But if you’re consistent and work on your craft everyday you’ll get better and better.

When you get to perform your newly sharpened work for an audience

you’ll be able to do it with a great deal more confidence knowing you’ve got this.

Work ethic

You’ve got to want it!

No artist can get far without hard work and determination

I think a great example of this is the rapper Kanye West

in a 2015 interview with Howard Stern, Seth Rogen describes running into Kanye at a hotel and getting to hear him rap an entire album he was working on from memory!

Here’s a clip from the interview:

Those are my tips

I hope it helped!
