Back to basics

So I’m trying to rest my voice today. Hopefully I can keep from using it.

Yesterday I went to see my art teacher from high school and get a little inspiration going , dug through some of her old sketchbooks and brainstormed some things to come.

This is what I imagine I look like trying to relax between projects

A painting , not sure if gifted or original

I’m gonna try to put up things she wouldn’t mind me sharing

Like I said she used to teach at my old high school

Pretty sure this one is her’s, a sketch of the hallway inside my old highschool

She taught me a lot about art, taught me to ask a lot of questions I hadn’t asked myself , and though I can’t draw or sculpt to save my life, I applied a lot of it to my writing.

I also think this is her’s, that handwriting was consistent throughout the sketchbook

I should probably note that I’m not sure which photos to attribute to her , and which ones old students may have done

I kind of snapped these as I read and didn’t have a chance to ask her.

For now though, I’m preparing to host tomorrow night at The Dock in Fort Worth , you can click here for more info.

I’ve also got one show booked for October and one in November,  more info to come on that soon.

Talk to you soon,

Sin.

Welcome!

Happy monday!

I’ve noticed a few new subscribers lately, thank you all for joining!

Now I’ve been maintaining this blog for a few months on a weekly basis. I’ve kind of just winged it and posted what was on my mind the minute before the week was up,

whether it be videos of my poetry, think pieces, show dates, interviews etc.

So I’d like to take a second and ask those of you that are reading, what would you like to see more of ?

Should I keep my random schedule or tighten up a bit?

A bit about me while we’re here: I have one poetry project out, working on a second….I’ve done a good amount of gigs in the local poetry scene, even did a short tour for my first project. I’m looking to prep and go to a college conference like apca next fall and eventually turn a living touring the college circuit and afford myself the luxury of working on my art full time.

Right now the purpose of this blog is as

1 A creative outlet

2 A platform I have full creative control over, and general hub for my followers/fans

3 A working resume or sorts, as much of my shows, interviews and poetry

All that being said, I’d love to hear you feedback in the comments!

Take care,

Sin.

Hey! Quick announcement. I’ve been invited to be on a radio show next Saturday from 1-3 p.m. So if you have a chance to tune in check out Power Play Radio

Now I’m still deciding what pieces to spit, so if you have any suggestions drop them in the comments, and if you haven’t heard me as of yet listen to the playlist on the side of this site. The download is free if you like what you hear.

I’ll try to get you guys the audio/video if can for next weeks post!

Am I a sellout?

That’s a question we all ask ourselves at some point isn’t it?

At least when we start trying to make some money from our art.

And it can be a huge creative roadblock if we let it stand in our way.

So how do you answer this question?

Well it all depends on your values as a creative.

Once you come to the conclusion that you want to do this for a living you may have to come to terms with playing the game just a little. It’s one of those sacrifices that comes with being a pro.

One of my favorite quotes on the subject comes from Jay-Z on his song “The Bounce” off The Blueprint 2

“For those that think Hov fingers bling bling’n
Either haven’t heard the album or they don’t know English
They only know what the single is, and single that out
To be the meaning of what he is about
And bein I’m about my business, not minglin much
Runnin my mouth, that shit kept lingerin
But no dummy, that’s the shit I’m sprinklin’
The album width to keep the registers ringin’
In real life, I’m much more distinguished
I’m like a bloke from London, England”

Genius does a great breakdown on these lyrics and Hov’s thoughts on the matter.

Years later, one of his own artists, and a personal favorite of mine J. Cole breaks it down for us at Harvard University

Things stop being as black and white as they were before, sacrificing a bit now could have great benefits later.

This isn’t a problem exclusive to music either. All artists seeking success come to a point where they have to decide “Am I a sellout?”

Its up to you to answer that.

Arlington here I come!

Real quick real quick real quick.

I know we’ve all got celebrations and cookouts to get fly for so here’s whats happening right now…

Just got booked for a gig at Brickhouse Lounge in Arlington

on Thursday the 13 from 6-9 PM

I’ll be doing one or two 5 minute set depending on the number of artists performing

As soon as i get a flyer and event page link I’ll post it on social media and add the event to my artist page on facebook.

Now the catch for this show is that I have to get at least 10 people through the door to see me to get my compensation

Now I’m not saying you have to go

but if you do want to swing by be sure to let me know you came by and tell the doorman you’re there to see me

(if you go online and get tickets take a screenshot!)

Its a great venue I’m excited to perform at

and I know its going to be great

Comment or @ me if you want to hear anything in particular when you come!
