Afterlife
I almost did not release this song.
I had so much mental back and forth about the content and whether I was just expressing myself or if the lyrics we actually a bit too unhinged.
This song is about jealousy. The emotion was so raw when I put the idea down I knew I had to finish the song because that real pain just makes really beautiful songs in its own way.
Its funny. The inspiration for this song and the framing of the topic are the same as Dead to me. Its dealing with grieving in relationships. That song was a hip-hop approach, cutting someone out of your life to deal with jealousy. Making them be dead to you.
This song was telling someone they'll have to wait until the afterlife to be with anyone else. At least on the surface. After a while the new meaning that came to me, and the one I tried to explore in the video, was me being in their past/my afterlife.
I wanted to make sure the video drove home the point that nothing was going to actually happen to this person. I am expressing my emotions, not being literal.
Although I think I am probably overthinking it, and people would know that already.
Either way, I think taking multiple passes at a concept is intersting. I might do more of it. I actually think I needed the first song to make this one, and I don't think I have created my best expression of this concept yet.
I tried singing a full song for the very first time with this one.
I refenced blues songs I really liked to get vocal cues.
The top songs I took inspiration from were Make it Rain and Darkness but there were several others I listened to before my session to get in the right headspace and conjure up the right emotion.
The producer Drumdog made the beat for this song.
I went out to Music in Focus studio to have it recorded, mixed and mastered.
Jake Rodriguez vocal coached me through both sessions until we got it down right.
Dennis shot the video.
We filmed at Del Sur Tacos in Dallas. A huge thanks to them for allowing us to use their space and for their hospitality.
Our actors for the video were Azora and $tackz.
A huge thanks to them also, they did amazing and shooting this was a breeze.
Hope you enjoy the track!

Lyrics
Verse 1
Hear that phone ring
Don’t act like you’re asleep
You think in such a short time
I forgot your routine
Don’t act like you’re away
Like I don’t know where you stay
Like I won’t pull up baby
I ain’t far from your place
Hook
And I better not find
no hands over that body of mine
You love that motherfucker
I don’t care
Love em’ in the afterlife
I’ll meet you there
Verse 2
Hear that phone ring
I can hardly sleep
Since you’ve been gone baby
I forgot my routine
Tryin’ to bury
the past
It keep kickin’ and screamin’
out of its grave
It won’t stay down
down
It wrestles with me
and it pushes me
under the ground
I might stay down
down
down
down
Hook
And I better not find
no hands over that body of mine
You love that motherfucker
I don’t care
Love em’ in the afterlife
I’ll meet you there
Hear that phone ring
Hear that phone ring
Hear that phone ring
Hear that phone ring
