I was working on some music with Seshun in late 2024. Since I hardly get the opportunity to swing by, I always make it a point to ask him for a beat pack when I'm there.

He sent over some new stuff he had been working on, and I immediately got the idea for the hook as I was listening to this beat ! 

The main vibe I got from this instrumental and song concept idea was that the lyrics should feel effortless. No need to make them super intricate or anything fancy. The focus was on keeping the energy up on this track.

The funny thing about songs like this, is you can be in a situation with someone and feel like this one day. And another day that same person can have you writing a super emotional song or a super sultry song. 

We're funny like that as people. One moment we're a player, the next we're in love, and a second later we're full of jealousy or despair. All in one relationship.

The thing I did make a conscious decision about on this track was making it explicit that there was no lying in this situation. 

“You knew what it was
from the first time

A lie to yourself
is the worst kind

I said I’m not yours
and you ain’t mine"

I also didn't want to paint the situation as though I was the only one who has some other “friends” on the side.

“We both got a little play
Broadway

Be careful when you slip away
off base” 

We both are playing the field.  

I think music should be about expression, and not necessarily prescriptive for how to live your life. After all, we live imperfect messy lives. 

Sometimes songs are just expression, sometimes you wanna make a statement, sometimes both.

For this song, the only message is you're only a player if everyone knows what's going on and agrees to it.

Also, I try to write a lot of songs, including this one, to be rapped along to by men or women. There's players on both sides.

I am chucking a bit as I write this at the fact I have written more about the philosophy behind “Nice Lil Vibe” than almost any of my other tracks.
