Artwork

Like many other songs, Artwork started off as something I came up with during one of my regular writing sessions.
Something about just throwing ideas out once or twice a week really works for me. I liked the idea so much after I started writing that I wrote the whole song or most of it that weekend.

It also helped that I was not too far removed from the inspiration at the time.

Artwork is a song about a casual relationship with the “artsy” type / Witchy Vibes type.
A type that seems to be, MY type, I'm finding.

I guess it makes sense for creative people to attract one another.

This song also shared a lot of inspiration and mood with my recent song Be Up.

I worked with Dennis who made the beat for it at his place.
He also filmed the performance video in Downtown Fort Worth!

I went out to Music in Focus studio to have it recorded, mixed and mastered.
This song was the first one in a while where I felt the need to track it twice to get my voice sounding just right.

Over time I am developing a bit more of an ear. I found it helpful for this song to think of what “character” I was embodying to put myself in the right headspace.

I have heard several artists describe the various sides of their music or their personality as different characters with different names even. I am starting to brainstorm what mine are for the different kinds of songs I make.

For songs like this one, I also find a picture or two of the inspiration to look at while I am in the booth. Helps bring all those emotions back up. I used to do it when performing heartbreak poems and needed to try and emote a bit more since it doesn't come as naturally to me. I'd look at photos of my ex before going onstage.
