Texican
Texican came from a conversation I had with my engineer Chico. He also tours with several artists as a DJ from time to time and described the audience at one of the shows he did as “Texican”.
That is, Mexicans from Texas who grew up with a blend of cultures and musical tastes. I had heard the term before but it did not click until that night.
I've also been wanting to explore more lyrical and upbeat tracks in this current season I am in, and thought a feel good, cruising record would be a perfect addition to the overall discography that's leaned pretty moody or sensual.
I tried to have fun with the writing process for this one and not overthink it too much.
I wanted to capture the mood of a Saturday morning cruise. You wake up feeling refreshed, you're dressed up and got nothing to do but ride around and enjoy the day. You hop in the car and play though all your favorites from all the genres you dig.
Some UGK, some Vicente Fernandez, some Z-Ro, etc.
I am also hoping to do some proper studying up on the fuller Houston rap history and and its songs, as well as some more contemporary Texican rappers for inspiration.
Still working my way through Wayne's discography which is quite extensive.
But, even listening to some music by a West Coast Mexican group like COYOTE recently has been tons of fun and given me more to pull from.
The producer Mike Lakes made the beat for this song.
I went out to Music in Focus studio to have it recorded, mixed and mastered.
Dennis filmed the video as always. For this track I really wanted to be out in the city and also show some love to some small businesses.
This video was shot all over Fort Worth. The locations were:
1. Birrieria Y Taqueria Cortez
2. El Camaron Pelao
3. The Fort Worth Stockyards
Murals at the first two locations were done by Juan Velazquez.
I was drinking coffee from Black Coffee and rocking a shirt from Trill Burgers
I had help from family styling for this video (thank you!) - and Chico also weighed in with a great suggestion to reference That Mexican OT for a sort of more casual/street Western style.
I was working on getting a lowrider for the shoot, but the owner had some last minute mechanical issues. I am still in touch with them, and will definitely have it in an upcoming project in some form or fashion!
Might do a Wayne style cover for my first EP when I am ready. You know he loves to lean on cars in his cover art lol.
